University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a 4-year public institution founded in 1886. UMES offers certificates, Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctor's degrees. The student population is 2,646 (2,069 undergraduate). The student to faculty ratio is 10 to 1. UMES is NCAA Division I (MEAC) participating in men's basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track and women's softball, basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, and volleyball.
Applicants must have applied for or have been accepted for admission, submit the most recent official transcript with the school seal and/or the signature of an authorized school official, and complete and submit the USDA/1890 National Scholars Program High School Application to the university liaison including a 500-800 word essay on one of the listed topics. 1) My interest in working for USDA. 2) How I envision the scholarship will impact me personally and my future as a public servant. 3) My experiences and perceptions about agriculture, food sciences and natural resource sciences.

The scholarship renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance, summer work performance and academic progress toward the bachelor’s degree.
