West Virginia State University is a 4-year public institution founded in 1891. WVSU offers certificates, Bachelor's and Master's degrees. The student population is 3,638 (3,502 undergraduate). The student to faculty ratio is 12 to 1. WVSU is NCAA Division II (MEC conference) participating in men's baseball, football, basketball, golf, tennis and women's softball, basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

Enrollment in an academic program in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) or Healthcare Field is preferred.
Renewable up to 4 years. Recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA annually, earn a minimum of 30 credit hours each academic year, participate in an undergraduate research experience or other type of experiential learning each academic year, participate in at least one co-curricular activity on campus each semester (i.e. student government, student organization, intercollegiate or club sport team, or performing group), must earn 10 hours of community service by the end of each semester (on-campus or in the community), visit the Career Services Office at least once each academic year, participate in an externship or internship experience during their junior and senior years, and participate in leadership and the character development program for Presidential Scholars.
